Aim: The School Programme, under the Major Akshay Girish Memorial Trust (MAGMT), is aimed at inculcating and motivating school students to the concept of service to the nation.
Methodology: A group of 50 students, from Class 9 of The Government High School, Doddballapur, Bangalore Rural., are selected for this intervention. The selection of students is done by the school. The classes are held once a month, usually on a Saturday, for a total of 90 minutes. The sessions are interactive where the students are encouraged to participate. It is also activity based learning with use of audio-visual aids. The sessions are divided into three parts.
- Important events of the month. Stress on information on days/events of national importance that promote patriotism.
- Communication in English. Through interesting stories/ audio visual means, children participate by reading, comprehension, pronunciation, exposure to new words and phrases
- Physical activity – games played outdoors. The games involve good communication, team work, team spirit, passion to win and fair play.
Exposure Visit : This session was to take the students to CRPF Training Centre, Bengaluru and expose them to a small section of the Armed Forces. The children were shown all important areas and explained aspects of training including Computers, Weapons training, Parade and GPS tracking. They asked many questions and paid respects to martyred soldiers at Shaheed Smarak.
Presentation of Certificates, Feedback and Way Forward: On the last session, students are presented with Certificate of Participation by Major Akshay Girish Memorial Trust. Students said they loved the sessions and were inspired and motivated to go ahead with confidence, effort and be service minded in the coming years too. Based on the very positive feedback received from students, teacher coordinator and Principal of Govt School Doddaballapur, MAGMT will be happy to continue the School Program in the same school with the next batch of students from class 9 and also expand it to other schools in the vicinity.
A yearly session wise curriculum has been designed to effectively take forward the program for the year 2019-20 and the Trust is happy to train potential volunteers and share the methodology and material for expanding the program to benefit more school children in Karnataka.
